Delicious is a social bookmarking tool that enables people to manage and share their bookmarks using "tags" (keywords). Instead of having access to only those bookmarks stored on your computer, you can now access all of your bookmarks (and those of millions of other people around the world) anytime and anywhere via the web.
Middle School Delicious Tagging
This year (2008-09) we will begin sharing resources as a middle school using the Delicious tool. These can be resources specific to our middle school visioning (21st century education, 1:1 laptop computing, single gender, UbD, etc); specific to your classroom (best web resources for the study of geography, for example, or writing); or specific to a tool or a concept. In order for us to share with one another, we are asking middle school faculty to do the following:
Set up a Delicious account.
Begin building the habit of saving your bookmarks to Delicious.
Utilize tagging conventions when you want to share something on a specific topic with Lovett faculty.*
*Note: We will add new tagging conventions to this page as you begin using Delicious and determining those topics where you'd like to share information more specifically with Lovett faculty. Before long, you'll be able to create the tag and add to the list yourself!
Getting Started
Step 1. If you do not have a Delicious account, please go to http://delicious.com and go through the three step process. (It will take 5 minutes.) If you already have a Delicious account, please go to Step 2.
Step 2. Using the "Search Delicious" search box in the upper right hand corner of the home page, search for one of the following topics using the tag noted:
Topic: Tag (Double word tags require an underscore to separate but indicate tag of two or more words)
Single Gender Education: single_gender
Unique by Design (UbD): UbD
Creativity: creativity
Blogs in Education: blogs_in_education
Digital Storytelling: digital_storytelling
Curriculum: curriculum
Step 3. Find one website that you would like to share with other middle school faculty. Open that site. Using the Delicious "buttons" on your browser (you downloaded these during setup), click on the gray-colored "tag" button. This will open a window where you will identify and "tag" your bookmark.
Step 4. Complete the bookmarking by giving it a title (if it doesn't have one), adding any description or note you'd like to add, and then giving it at least one if not multiple tags. The tag might be something like: blog (space) tool (space) resources (space) LovettMS
The tag "LovettMS" is a tagging convention specific to the Lovett Middle School. Any bookmark that includes the tag LovettMS will be aggregated under that tag. Not only can we access those items as a group by using searching for that tag in Delicious (just put LMS in the search box), you can refine the search further to include items that are in that group but also tagged as "math," "single_gender," "blogs," etc.
Please view this screencast (coming) if you would like to review how to complete a bookmark of a site and understand how to tag.
